Heathen Convention 2024

Demonical are preparing a new album. We asked about its recording. We were interested in the last tour in Russia. The questions answered the bassist Martin Schulman.

Hi Demonical! In present you are on a tour around Russia. What are your fresh experiences? How it’s going on the tour? What are your feelings about Russian fans? How many people are visiting the shows?

Russia was great. It was our first ever visit to the country and we noticed that we have a good following there and the fans were hungry for some Swedish death metal. The only hard thing were the travels, the country is huge so the distances between the shows was between 600 and 900 kilometers.

Which band(s) supports you in Russia?

Spasmodic from Sweden was with us on all the dates and there were also various local bands at each show.

Demonical was formed from remains of the band Centinex. I was in that time really excited by album Hellbrigade. Is the Centinex definitely closed chapter or are you thinking about its resurrection?

It’s a closed chapter at least for now. I have Demonical and that is enough. I have no need to do the same death metal in two bands.

You are coming back to play in Czech Republic quite often. I have noticed that you have played at several shows with Brutally Deceased. Do you know some other Czech bands? What’s your opinion to Czech metal scene? Do you like staying in Czech Republic?

Yeah we always enjoy playing in Czech, great support from the audience there and always good arrangements. Brutally Deceased are really good, really Swedish sounding death metal, so I dig them a lot. Root, Hypnos and classic Krabathor are some other favourite bands from your great country.

You are playing also in band Interment. Since forming in 1991 you have released only one full length album. After that there were only several demos and one compilation. Are you planning to make new album or some other new stuff?

Yeah I’m playing in Interment since 2007. A new album is in the works, or actually has been for a long time, it’s all up to the guitarist to write some material for it.

It’s more than a year since you have released your last album Death Infernal. When you look back would you do something differently? Why? Is the CD selling well? What were the reactions, reviews?

The reactions for „Death Infernal“ have been really good and positive which has felt great but to be honest, we haven’t been that surprised as we knew we had a killer album in our hands when we released it.
We are currently working on a follow up, we will start the recording in a few weeks, and basically that album will be a natural follow up to the previous album. No huge differences, still crushing Swedish death, but of course even better than before...

The album has a great brutal sound. Where you recorded it? Do you have a secret receipt for a characteristic “Swedish rattling” sound?

We recorded the album at Necromorbus Studios in Stockholm, a studio that is owned and operated by our vocalist. We have recorded all our albums there and plan to continue with it in the future as well.
We don’t have any special receipt in order to get that sounds, it’s the classic Boss HM2 pedal that creates the magic.

I’ve bought your T-shirt with a great design of Costin Chioreanu. Did he make also the booklet of your last album Death Infernal? I really like his work.  Are you counting with his cooperation also at new album and T-shirts? How have you started cooperation with Costin?

We have worked with Costin for almost all Demonical related artworks and designs. He is truly a great artist who understands our vision and concept and most likely we will work with him in the future as well.
Our co-operation started already back in 2004 or something when he did some art for Centinex and since then we have stayed in touch.

Last couple of years a lot of young bands are trying to play and sound similar as on records of old Grave, Dismember, Entombed etc. Have you noticed any of young band you think that they could push the Swedish pure death metal further?

Yeah there are several bands from Sweden trying to capture that old spirit and sound, many succeed and some fail. Morbus Chron is one band that has understood the essence, they are great.

All around the world vinyl records are coming back to life again. On your website is possible to buy only LP Servant of the Unlight. Are you going to release other albums on vinyl?

All our albums have been released on vinyl but the two latest ones are sold out, only „Servants..“ is still available. Vinyls are the only right format for old-school death, the releases both sounds and looks better!

I have noticed information on the internet that you are preparing new release for the next year. Have you recorded this album yet? Or are you just composing now? Do you have a name yet?  What can fans look for? When will be album available to buy?

That’s right, we are currently in the pre-production phase for the new album, we planned to start the recordings in late November but we have pushed it forward to late January instead due to several reasons. The album should be out in late May or early June and the fans can expect a blasting death metal album, the best demonical have ever released!

Each band is composing in different way. Some of them are closed in the studio and working there. Others have prepared ideas in advance. What’s your attitude? Do you have a main composer or all band members are involved?

I am the main composer of the band. I write on the guitar, prepare rough demos at home with the guitar and drum machine, then present the ideas to the other guys at the rehearsal room and then we rehearse the stuff together and make changes and adjustments if needed.
Sometimes the final track you can hear on the album is very close to the rough demo version I made at home, sometimes it’s totally different. Even if I’m the main composer in the band every member is allowed to have their ideas and their input but in the end I’m still the one with the final say.

You have always been representatives of the true Swedish death metal. Will be it so on the new release? Are you planning some surprise for example an inclination to melodies, keyboards similar as e.g. In Flames (but In Flames actually don’t play death metal any more - smile)

Plain and simple: We play Death Metal so no keyboards and no fancy bullshit.

What are you guys from Demonical actually listening?

I hear a lot of music but I do only listen to old Swedish death metal, old heavy metal and ABBA. That’s it.

Have you found interesting some of the new releases? What’s your opinion to new CD from Grave –„Endless Procession of Souls“?

I hardly listen to any new releases. I stick to old classic albums. Haven’t heard the new Grave disc, for me their peak was „Into the Grave“.

You are playing death metal for a quite a long time. Do you meet your colleagues from other bands? Is metal scene in Sweden united? Do you stand together? Are you going for a beer with other guys? Who the Demonical are drinking most with?

Yes I meet all kinds of persons so sometimes I meet individuals who play in bands but I don’t see why it should be of any relevance to namedrop any of them.
I honestly don’t know nor care if the scene is united or stand together. We do our thing and that’s it.

When I have mentioned beer, what do you say about Czech beer? Do you like it? Do you have some preferred brand?

I don’t know anything about beer as I don’t drink such. The only alcohol I drink is vodka.

I’m always asking…Do the people come to shows in Sweden? Or is it the same miserable story as in Czech Republic. Sometimes I have the feeling that people prefers sitting home at the internet to go to see their favourite band.

Yes people go to shows in Sweden but the problem with shows here is that they have to be on Fridays or Saturdays. There are no shows, except big ones, during the weeks.

What’s your opinion on melodic death metal which comes also from Sweden? Do you like some band, record etc.?

I don’t waste energy and time on bands that I do not find interesting so I think my answer is „no“.

Another popular question... Do you think that downloading from internet kills music? Or it helps to get music to the listeners?

Yes it kills music. Downloading kills record-sales and that way the income for labels and bands. You should listen to records and albums, have the whole product in your hand, and not only watch a fucking screen with a MP3 player.
However, the possibility to stream music, music that is controlled and owned by the bands and their labels, is a good thing as that way you can discover new stuff. But after you have streamed the stuff and if you like it you have to buy the actual album.

What are the Demonical plans for upcoming months? You are working on new release. Will you support it by some bigger tour? I hope you will stop in Czech Republic.

We will record our new, yet untitled, album during January and February for a late May or early June release through Cyclone Empire. During the summer we will do a few festivals and then a full European tour in the fall.

Thank you for an interview and wish you a lot of sold CD’s and as many as possible mad true death metal fans.

Hail Satan!
