01/ NECRONOMICON BEAST - Sowers of Discord CD (jewel case)

One could say that even before famed illustrator and now longtime ally of DOOMENTIA Mark Riddick introduced us to NECRONOMICON BEAST, for whom he designed the blistering cover of 'Sowers Of Discord', they were due to end up on the label anyway. Thrash metal the evil way is the name of the game here and the screaming chorus that goes like "Ave Sathanaaaaaas!" of the opening track "Antichriste" should tell you all you need to know about this Jundiai in the Sao Paulo suburbs-based lot. Except that whereas one might have expected another black/thrash band with punk leanings, this power-trio proves with a fist that they just don't play to the same category and don't really fit with the overall chaotic sound of the Brazilian scene.

Maybe fuelled by their various experiences in different fields of the vast metal sphere - heavy-metal with WYTCHKRAFT, doom/death with MORIENDI, folk/metal with FOLKLORD etc. - they've settled for a music that has a much tighter, American-like type of sound yet without loosing a drop of their blasphemous elements, even daring on a regular basis to go beyond the five minutes mark. So think of an early AT WAR or BULLDOZER with a modern production that would have decided to get his membership card at the Satanic Church and go on a killing spree in the nearest liquor store!

After a series of demos and limited releases on selected format such as tapes, 'Sowers Of Discord' represents band's second proper full-length after fourteen years (!) of existence, their first 'real' release since the 2004's debut album 'Hell Thrash War' and their first recording featuring new member Warhammer, on bass. But it's also first and foremost a great proof than in 2013, with songtitles like "Warfield" or "World Assured Destruction" thrash is alive and well and still obsessed with cruelty!

02/ DRUID LORD - Hymns for the Wicked CDdigipack

Originally released on Horror Pain Gore Death Productions on Halloween 2010, 'Hymns For The Wicked' wasn't just another debut album: first and foremost, it signed the brilliant return to form of some of Florida's most seasoned veterans, back to where they belong that is the dirty swamp of extreme metal the 80's way. Death, thrash, doom... Hell, having take part in such seminal acts as EQUINOX, ACHERON, INCUBUS or DIABOLIC, Steve Spillers (drums), Pete Slate (lead guitar) and Tony Blakk (basse and vocals) surely know about them all hence DRUID LORD that works as a kind of combination of all.

Owing a large debt to the mighty CELTIC FROST but also to doom lords such as CANDLEMASS and the very early doom/death scene - the intro alone of "Witchfinder" would have made PARADISE LOST circa the 'Lost Paradise' period proud - and akin to what ACID WITCH achieved on their debut, 'Hymns For The Wicked' is an old-school record that isn't nevertheless stuck in the past just for the sake of it. No, DRUID LORD have just to shave off the crap and take the genre back to its natural source. No gimmick, no female vocals, no modern production, just filthy and dirty doom with a death-metal edge, played with conviction, gutso and conviction.

Initially recorded as a trio (the band has since been joined by Ben Ross on rhythm guitar), this debut has lost in two years and a half none of its impact and DOOMENTIA is damn proud to make this intense piece of dooooom available to the public, this time with two extra tracks as bonuses for the diehards, curled from their latest 7 inches 'Druid Death Cult' that got almost instantly sold-out upon its release in April 2012.

03/ WOLFHEAD - Wolhead LP

You’d think that a band born in 2008 after some drunk rehearsals in between black/death outfit BETWEEN THE FROST guitarist Iosue and guitar-wizard-cum-producer and leader of old-school death-metal warlords GRAVEYARD would only mean buzzsaw guitars, grinding drums and putrid production wouldn’t you? Except that WOLFHEAD won’t let be pigeonholed that easily and Javi himself step furiously on any possible categorisation: “It lies somewhere rock n’roll, heavy-metal, stoner, doom, grunge, black-metal, whatever! A song sounds like BATHORY but then moves on to TROUBLE territories, then towards MOTÖRHEAD highway before taking a left-turn somewhere in between old ENSLAVED and DARKTHRONE… IN a way, it’s the exact opposite of GRAVEYARD that stands for a very specific sound. For WOLFHEAD, whatever sounds cool to our ears will make it, let it be keyboards, harmonized vocals, strange instrument or even harmonica!” Confused? You betcha. And don’t you forget some ALICE IN CHAINS, BLACK SABBATH or SOLITUDE AETERNUS thrown in the bin for good measure…

Recorded in Barcelona in Javi’s own Moontower studios in between October 2008 and December 2009, such a mix bag could easily have been a recipe for disaster without the proper vocalist to pull it off. Enter Ivan, the already legendary frontman of the sadly defunct GREAT COVEN, whose legacy is now being carried by WARCHETYPE: he might be the only guy in this galaxy capable to have one foot in Birmingham circa 1970 and the other one in Valhalla along Thor the god of thunder, as exampled on the eight minutes plus epic, “Sons Of Asgard”. Or pull off such a relaxed and yet fitting performance for the band’s surprising entirely acoustic rendition of PINK FLOYD’s ode to their fallen brother Syd Barrett, “Wish You Were Here”.

Adorned with a superb Andrei Bouzikov (MUNICIPAL WASTE, CANNABIS CORPSE etc.) cover art, WOLFHEAD self-titled debut simply ranks next to HORN OF THE RHINO and DOOMDOGS among DOOMENTIA’s finest stoner/metal hybrid…
