SEPULTURA – „Schizophrenia“ (1987)
Poprvé jsem jméno SEPULTURA zaregistroval asi v roce 1988, ve fanzinu KRYPTORU se psalo něco jako „jestli jsi pořádný thrasher, musíš mít: SEPULTURA – ,Schizophrenia‘“. Jenže ono to tehdy se sháněním nahrávek ze zahraničí nebylo až tak snadné, vždycky nějaký pátek trvalo, než se někde novinka objevila... Mnohem více se mi ale líbily dvě následující perly – „Beneath the Remains“ a „Arise“. Dodnes považuji tyhle dvě desky z tvorby SEPULTURY za nejlepší, byť „Roots“ jednoduše nešlo přehlédnout a ignorovat.
K „Roots“ resp. světovému věhlasu měl ale 4. srpna 1969 novorozenec Massimiliano Antonio Cavalera daleko. Narodil se sice v dobře situované rodině, ale o tom, že z něj bude muzikant, se rozhodovalo až o řadu let později.
Kniha je psána chronologicky, Max popisuje dětství, dospívání, dospělost, samozřejmě svým pohledem, takže prakticky ze všech peripetií vychází právě on jako ten „správný týpek“. Sem tam uzná chybku, ale jinak je to, vcelku pochopitelně, o jednom správném rozhodnutí za druhým. Ono je vůbec zajímavé, jak jeho život ovlivnila úmrtí jeho blízkých. Kdyby mu nezemřel otec (Maxovi bylo 10 let), nejspíš by dnes neběhal po světě maník s kytarou a dredy, který dobyl metalový Olymp. Maxův táta byl totiž diplomat, rodina tedy nestrádala, naopak žila v přepychu a radovánkách. Jenže najednou tu byla úplně jiná realita, vdova s dětmi se ze dne na den ocitla bez prostředků (nechápu, že neměli nic našetřeno) a začala žít jak se dalo. Max s mladším bratrem Iggorem se v pubertě proměnili v neřízené střely, vtipné je třeba to, že je postupně vyhodili z vojenské, církevní i veřejné školy... Max popisuje dospívání se všemi průšvihy, a nebýt toho, že se s Iggorem chytili muziky, nejspíš by neměli daleko do kriminálu.
Stejně je zajímavé, jak z dnešního pohledu metalové hvězdy začínaly – Cavalerovci v roce 1984 nic neměli (hlavně peníze, třeba první „nábojové“ pásy si vyráběli z tužkových baterií), nic neuměli (před prvním koncertem neměl Max naladěnou kytaru a ani nevěděl, co to znamená), všechno se časem naučili sami a z ničeho nic se postupně drápali nahoru. Jistě, byla jiná doba, nebyla taková konkurence a svět nebyl globalizovaný, ale i tak je to interesantní. Interesantní jsou i všechny ty příhody, které se SEPULTUROU během prvních let zažili; z mého pohledu je právě první polovina knihy zajímavější, to, jak si všechno museli... zasloužit je to správné slovo.
Zlom přišel právě s „Beneath...“, která kapelu katapultovala na světové výsluní. Max otevřeně, takřka bezelstně popisuje jak nahrávání všech alb, tak jednání s vydavateli, setkávání s metalovými ikonami, výběr umělců, kteří tvořili obaly, prostě všechno do sebe pěkně zapadá. Velký vliv na jeho život mělo seznámení s manažerkou SACRED REICH Glorií v roce 1989, pozdější životní partnerkou, tehdy matkou pěti (!) dětí, která se stala manažerkou SEPULTURY a později všech Maxových kapel.
V roce 1996 přišla další tragédie, při autonehodě zemřel Gloriin syn Dana, kterého měl Max velmi rád a hodně to s ním zamávalo. Jenže SEPULTURA byla rozjetá a kolegové nechtěli ani slyšet o nějaké pauze, takže došlo k rozchodu, Max byl odejit a rozhádal se se zbylými členy i s bratrem Iggorem... Do roka ale postavil SOULFLY, se kterými se v dalších létech vydal na neprobádaná území, zkoušel kombinovat různé žánry a často měnil spoluhráče. Byla to ale zároveň doba, kdy se mu alkohol a drogy (analgetika) vymkly z kontroly...
Reminiscence č. 2
BRUTAL ASSAULT – SOULFLY (2007)
Poprvé jsem viděl SOULFLY naživo v roce 2007 na Brutal Assaultu. Od té doby jsem měl na Maxe poměrně jasný názor – a nešlo zrovna o názor kladný. Ono ani slovo „viděl“ v předchozí větě není přesné, frajer totiž nechal vypnout velkoplošnou obrazovku a tak kdo stál vzadu, neviděl nic. Max navíc působil hodně divným dojmem, myslím, že byl lehce mimo realitu a tehdy mě s prominutím tak nasral, že jsem o jeho kapely úplně ztratil zájem.
Max se později z osidel alkoholu a léků vymanil, v roce 2009 podstoupil léčení, ještě předtím se udobřil s bratrem, se kterým založil rodinnou kapelu CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, vedle toho se už dříve objevil i v dalších projektech, z nich patří k nejznámějším PROBOT Davea Grohla, který ke knize napsal předmluvu. Příběh zpestřují vložené (snad) dobové citáty řady lidí z hudební branže, často třeba Sharon Osbourneové, členů rodiny, producentů, v závěru nechybí ani Maxova diskografie.
Maxův psaný projev je poměrně suchý, žádná složitá souvětí, ale rovnou k věci. Mně to místy trochu vadí, přece jen mám raději květnatější sloh, ale jako problém to nevidím. Trochu horší je to s kombinací spisovných a nespisovných tvarů, které se střídají bez ladu a skladu, ale ono asi není jednoduché překládat hovorové výrazy... Když jsem u překladu, tak jedna věta mi zůstane v paměti navždy, to když se překladatel snažil do češtiny převést chybu ve slově vlasy (možná bylo v originále něco jako hayr, co já vím) a použil výraz vlasi. Myslím, že to šlo vyřešit elegantněji, takhle to vypadá jako pěst na oko.
Trochu bohatší mohla být fotografická část, ale nakonec člověk ty fotky zhlédne jednou dvakrát a pak se k nim vracet nebude, zato pohled na titulní stranu jej bude pronásledovat jako noční můra celý život. Tenhle rastaman že je Max Cavalera? No nazdar... Jakákoliv fotka by splnila účel lépe, člověk neznalý jména Cavalera si nejspíš bude myslet, že jde o knihu o reggae. (úsměv) Kniha je vázaná, přebal lakovaný (a vypadá trvanlivě), papír v knize velmi kvalitní, takže v tomto směru jde bezesporu o výbornou práci. Práci, která by opravdu neměla chybět v knihovničce žádného metalisty, kterého SEPULTURA či SOULFLY zajímají.
